What diseases do foxes carry and what are symptoms of a sick fox?


Foxes are the wildlife creatures that are usually categorized in the family of dogs. They usually in the wild areas like forests and sometimes can be seen in the urban areas for the sake of food. Foxes also carry some diseases being a living being. Some of the disease foxes can carry are mentioned below:

Canine Infectious Hepatitis:

This viral disease of liver is often seen in dogs and foxes. The main cause of this disease is the contact with the feces, urine and saliva of any infected animal. Some symptoms of this disease include loss of appetite, vomiting, neurological symptoms and abdominal pain. Sadly, it is caught late and chances of survival become less for the infected fox.

Sarcoptic Mange:

Sarcoptic mange is another kind of disease that is usually caused by the mites burrowed in animal’s skin. It can occur in a fox with low immunity and in the dense areas. Fortunately, this could be dealt easily.

Toxocariasis:

Another disease found in fox is Toxocariasis. This disease is caused by the roundworm carried by them in their body. Feces of the fox release those roundworms that can contaminate the soil which can be a source of transmission of this disease to the humans coming in contact with the soil and most of the time affected ones are children.

Symptoms of a sick fox:

  • If you touch the fox and it doesn’t move or is not responding well then this could be a sign of sickness.
  • If the fox is letting you come closer to itself maybe sick.
  • A fox that seems unnaturally tamed can also be sick.
However, Humans should keep themselves away from foxes in order to stay protected from the diseases they may carry because some of those could be infectious and transmissible to humans. The best thing to do when you see a fox in any condition near you is to call the rescue center.
